Notion released a new color palette under the radar of any official release just over a week ago. The changes were dramatic with more vibrant highlights and colored text to match. A nice upgrade from the original black text overlay. Board-view backgrounds were also implemented. A bold choice for an under the radar release!
After backlash from the community over the color choice regarding accessibility for color blind individuals and aesthetic annoyances, Notion rolled out another more neutral palette and removed the background board-view colors temporarily. This palette looked a lot like the first with only minor changes.
From my understanding, the palette released in the latest update is the final third rendition. The light colors are great. I especially like the yellow highlight. It used to be quite muted. Now it’s a banana yellow. Great for a bold highlight.
Dark-mode thoughts
Dark-mode’s brown and orange are hard to decipher, but overall, the colors look very similar to the original with a bit more vibrancy. I really like the blue highlight in dark-mode and I find myself creating bi-color pages with gray and blue a lot.
New Group Feature Too!
I’ve been doing a lot of experimenting with the new group feature. If you’re familiar with Notion, you’ll know that grouping was exclusive to Board-view databases and the select properties. Now, you can group in ANY database type (excluding calendar), and group by ANY property (excluding rollups). Below is an example of grouping in timeline by a relation property to an external project database.
Personal Update
This weekend was an absolute whirlwind. My baby girl Haley was badly injured at my local dog park and I spent a good portion of my Sunday at the animal hospital. I’m happy to say she is recovering with a good number of stitches (ready for Halloween!), and she’ll be okay and back to playing with her rowdy coonhound sister, Lizzie, in a few weeks.
With that being said, I was able to film a chatty video tour of some use-cases for the new group feature while she was relaxing and recovering last night. That will be out in the next couple days. In the meantime, I’ll be giving Haley my undivided attention and infinite cuddles!
