As I create my next big Notion template, a farming game for task management, I wonder what the benefits are for turning projects, goals and tasks into a game. Here is what I've gathered.
1. Increases engagement with tasks
When there are tasks to achieve in a game the user is more enthusiastic to achieve an end goal. Gamification in Notion can trigger positive engagement to achieve the next level or achievement.
However, if the user is creating the game, anticipation for achievements can be diminished. The planning and logistics stage can damper motivation for some. That is why longevity needs to be kept in mind.
2. Increases enthusiasm through competition
Especially with the addition of community, a competitive scoreboard and achievements can increase enthusiasm to complete a goal. For community and gamification in Notion, Conrad Lin’s x3 community comes to mind.
3. Desirable achievements remedy project drawbacks
For example, procrastination is one task management drawback I want to address with my template. I want the user to be rewarded when a task is completed early. Further, the reward should be valuable. A simple “Well Done!” formula result doesn’t encourage the user to keep working.
And so, reworking the achievements to be used toward future projects is a must. The reward needs to be worthwhile.
4. Fun way to analyze progress
The “points” and achievement system is one component I know to be highly doable. With a numerical point system, date properties and smart relations, I can create a robust analytics page that can show the user stats like:
Usage statistics and play time
Most productive days of work in the week/time of day
Efficiency statistics
Procrastination trends
Suggestions for future scheduling based on past behavior
And much more!
